High school English teachers are charged with preparing students for the college and this means, they are not only expected to introduce students to a range of literary traditions but also ensure that students have the reading comprehension and writing skills required to pass college admissions tests, such as the SAT, as well as succeed at the post-secondary level.
Many times, both parents come home from a full day of work and then need to juggle the responsibilities of managing their children, participating in social events, attending athletic practices and much more. It’s also possible that one or both parents did not take advanced math in school. So, whether the curriculum has changed or there simply aren’t enough hours in the day, parents can find it difficult to give their children the help they need to excel in math.
Do not expect your students to be English majors. Understand that they don't all share the love of reading and writing and all things literary. If you understand that; if you meet them where THEY are (not where you expect or want them to be); if you are flexible with your time and your resources; and if the curriculum is not always the stuff the kids NEED to know, you'll be just fine. Also, keep granola bars in your desk drawer for the kids who didn't get breakfast (or for when you forget your lunch on the kitchen counter), let students stand up and move around a lot - literature is really, really boring for some (I know, weird, right?), and even honors students can try your patience daily.
