If you only love your content, and not kids, DON'T do it. Frequently English majors love literature, or grammar, or writing, but they aren't passionate about helping kids. Don't let your NEED to cover content outweigh the real work of helping kids. Be prepared to feel tired and under appreciated, but know that one day, the least likely kid will come back and tell you that you are the reason they made it. That is why you teach.

The job of an English teacher requires a deep understanding of sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and literature. It encompasses teaching creative composition such as prose, poetry, short stories, and narratives as well as technical writing skills which include news articles, reports, journals, and essays. A teacher of English should develop students’ oral and written communication skills, including critical thinking, oral and written comprehension, and problem-solving skills. English teachers are responsible for planning lessons that fit into a school’s approved curriculum and supporting student learning to state standards.
To become an online teacher, you need at least a bachelor’s degree in education, or the subject you wish to teach. For example, chemistry teachers should have a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Many teachers pursue a master's degree or doctorate which makes them eligible for administrative positions. Online teachers who work with public school programs also need a teaching license or certificate, which may entail more coursework and the passing of a certification exam. State requirements vary, so research the qualifications where you live. Do not expect your students to be English majors. Understand that they don't all share the love of reading and writing and all things literary. If you understand that; if you meet them where THEY are (not where you expect or want them to be); if you are flexible with your time and your resources; and if the curriculum is not always the stuff the kids NEED to know, you'll be just fine. Also, keep granola bars in your desk drawer for the kids who didn't get breakfast (or for when you forget your lunch on the kitchen counter), let students stand up and move around a lot - literature is really, really boring for some (I know, weird, right?), and even honors students can try your patience daily.

You can apply for an English teaching program if you are under 18 but will be 18 by the time the program starts. If this is not the case for you, we suggest looking at volunteer work that does not involve working with children and where volunteers have fewer responsibilities for now. You can always come back to teach English abroad as a volunteer once you are 18 and older.
If you are uncomfortable with one-on-one tutoring, or are having trouble engaging in your sessions, consider small-group tutoring. Some people learn better in a multi-person environment where they can exchange ideas with their peers. Small groups offer you more of a “classroom” experience, while still giving you the personal attention that you might not get at school.
It's always beneficial to mention your volunteer experience on a CV as it demonstrates social awareness and the will to contribute to a greater good. Companies embrace individuals who are not only interested in personal gain but who also have a feeling of responsibility. Depending on your future plans, gaining experience as an English teacher volunteer may open other career doors in non-profit organizations or other teaching positions which require some experience with students.
