People with communications, journalism, marketing and public relations degrees who are well-grounded in English grammar and expository writing might consider teaching as an alternate career choice. These professionals, perhaps enticed by a standard workweek and two-month summer vacations, need to become certified before entering the education field. After graduating from teaching certification programs, new teachers are mentored by an experienced teacher until they earn full certification.

I love to be helpful to people, and I love to help students improve their performance in classes and on tests. I have an excellent track record of strong performances in graded classes and on standardized tests. I am confident that I can help any student take their performance to the next level in any of several academic subject areas, especially math and chemistry, and on standardized tests.... I learn first. That is, I learn a student's learning style and barriers to improved performance. Then, I cater my approach to that learning style and offer ways to overcome those barriers.
My students do well!  I am a chemical engineer.  I know math and science well.  I have tutored students after work for 12 years.  I know students well.  I work with a student to find the knowledge holes that cause problems.  I explain the missing concept and then explain it again from a second angle.  I work through the problem with the student and watch him do it again.  When we find and correct holes in the student's knowledge base, he is caught up and ready to excel in his class.  He often finds that he doesn't need a tutor any more -- not great for my business model, but definitely my goal. ... A note on tenure: For postsecondary teachers, a significant goal in the traditional academic career is attaining tenure — a guarantee that a professor cannot be fired without just cause. The tenure process can take up to seven years of moving up the ranks in tenure-track positions. The ranks are assistant professor, associate professor, and professor. Tenure is granted through a review of the candidate’s research, contribution to the institution, and teaching abilities. However, institutions are relying more heavily on limited-term and part-time faculty contracts.

What It Pays: Though it's completely subjective to the company, you'll likely be paid per post or hourly. Factors that could increase or decrease the pay scale include word count, research, interviewing an expert, and more. Many freelancers are full-time, but if you're looking for a side-hustle to make some weekend money, this is a great option too. According to Pay Scale, the average salary for a freelance writer is about $24/hr.

Not everyone can teach, no matter how knowledgeable he or she is in any subject. I began teaching Grammar, and quickly learned the text the students were made to buy was extremely puzzling...so I made up my own weekly Grammar Packages. Then I started teaching Composition 101 and learned that the most difficult task for students is focus...working on this alone helped many of my students. Later I taught Intro to Literature. This became a passion of mine because I had to allow for many different insights to a poem or story. Keeping in mind that another won't quite reach the same conclusion to Literary Writings made teaching this subject very successful for me.
Successful tutoring takes time. Just like you wouldn’t expect to learn an entire year’s worth of knowledge in the first few weeks of school, you also can’t expect to raise your grades from a “D” to an “A” after only a few tutoring sessions. It’s important to set realistic expectations before you start so you don’t get discouraged or frustrated along the way.

This particular work-at-home opportunity takes a little more work experience in general than the other four on this list, but it pays better too. Search engine evaluators examine Internet search results and give feedback as to whether they are accurate, relevant, and spam-free. To do this, the evaluator must be knowledgeable about current culture and the Internet, with good communication skills. Sometimes a college degree is required or preferred, but direct experience as a search evaluator is usually not.
This online teaching service connects students to tutors from computers in their local library, community center, school, after-school program, or from home. To become certified as an online tutor, you must have a degree from or be enrolled in a U.S. or Canadian college, then you must pass a test in your area of specialty and submit a writing sample. The process takes 1–3 weeks. Pay is based on the subject tutored and the number of hours tutored.
