Some English teachers also teach journalism and yearbook courses, drama, public speaking, debate, and a variety of specialized writing classes that focus on magazine, fiction, early romantic, neoclassical or biographical writing. Regardless of their area of expertise, all English teachers are expected to have a firm grasp of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and written communication rules.
Tutors are private teachers who work with students either one-on-one or in small groups outside of the regular school system to strengthen their understanding of course materials and help them succeed in their studies. They do so by teaching concepts, problem-solving methods, effective studying techniques, and test-taking strategies using methods best suited to each student’s individual learning style.

What It Is: Students in countries including Japan, Korea, France and Germany are looking for English speakers to practice with. Sessions focus on things like making professional small talk or running a meeting (trainers are provided with specifics on how to teach each topic, and are also trained themselves for two days before starting the job). Lessons take place either over the phone or on a live Internet video service like Skype — sometimes at night, because you're working with students in different time zones. You need to commit to a minimum of 20 hours a week at consistent times, and can work as many as 35 hours.
While most K-12 teachers hold a bachelor’s degree, about 12% hold a master’s degree or other postgraduate degree or certificate.4 Holding a higher-level degree in English, literature, or a related subject may help prospective English teachers become more competitive in the job market. As the majority of post-secondary teachers of English hold a master’s or doctoral degree, pursuing an advanced degree can also open up further job opportunities.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics current Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median national annual salary for English language and literature teachers, post secondary is $63,730. Candidates are also encouraged to take the Next Step by enrolling in the Teaching Online Practicum where they will create a capstone project focusing on their lessons and skills learned throughout the entire Teaching Online certificate program. This course will focus on students progress and practical application to current or prospective work opportunities. Students will work collaboratively with an advisor before submitting their final project. During the application process, a prospective candidate should consider a possible project or course they will build throughout the program. The project or course will allow the student to apply learned tools and demonstrate results in delivering curriculum online.
A word of caution: Remember that where very little is required, very little is offered. These jobs don’t pay much, and they are not going to provide a reference for your resume. It may take working at several different of these online jobs to pull in the income you want. And as always, know the signs of a work-at-home scam as you sort through the opportunities.
