I started out simply attending SI for BIOS 110 as a freshman and loved it so much that I used it for as many courses as I could afterward!  These also included my general Chemistry courses, CHEM 121 and CHEM 124.  I started working at the Student Success Center as a tutor and SI instructor last summer.  After almost a year of working, I have led SI sessions for BIOS 101, 110, and 120, and I have held study sessions for CHEM 124.  Having gone through these courses myself and attended SI for my own benefit, I strongly encourage all to take advantage of the Student Success Center's services.
I have been tutoring with Louisiana State University Shreveport for one semester, but have been leading group study sessions since my freshmen year of college. I first encountered the Student Success Center in the fall of 2017 when I attended a Supplemental Instruction Session for Organic Chemistry I. I found the sessions so helpful in allowing me to further understand the difficult concepts of the course through metacognitive intervention that I attended every session after that. The results of attending those sessions reflected in my grades, and I passed the course with an A. Not only did I receive helpful instruction through the Student Success Center, my confidence in my academic ability grew as well. I wanted to offer this same helpfulness and confidence to my peers, so I sought to tutor for the Student Success Center to use the same learning strategies that helped me to help my peers.
Take your school career seriously! From the freshman year onward, work hard to become the best reader and writer that you can be. Take advantage of every opportunity to challenge yourself as a learner, take AP classes if available, take online or blended learning classes if available. The time that it takes to complete the process varies from state to state. It can also vary depending on the time of the year. Some states have a shorter window for processing during the off-season when they aren’t as busy. One way to streamline the process is to know how soon you can accomplish each step in the licensing process. For instance, it may take weeks for a completed background check. This may be something to complete as soon as you are able to. Sending for official transcripts and test scores as soon as they are available will also save you time.
Online teaching requires special considerations. You may find that much of what you’re used to telling students verbally now needs to be translated into text. You’ll also want to know what technology options are available to make sure you’re taking advantage of your options: Are timed quizzes available? Does your learning management system (LMS) allow links to YouTube? Can students video themselves answering discussion questions, or does their homework have to be written? The plot is disjointed,the characters are pathetic not just that but all the characters were annoying and rude, truly horrible you couldn't pick a single likable character in the bunch, was that the point? overall the film was a gigantic waste of my time. It was a bad film the script was awful. I have no idea what the film was about and i watched in its entirety. was there supposed to be a moral? was it a drama? a comedy? a tearjerker? Wow! This is a tough one. Honestly, don't do it if you cannot stand kids/young adults. Don't think that a high school class is going to be anything like your LIT 451 class - you know, where all 15 of you sit down with the professor and discuss Frankenstein through a Freudian lens. Don't think that all your kids are going to like reading Jane Eyre because you like it. Know that parents are going to blame you for every horrid grade/missing assignment. Know that when you finally get used to one lesson plan format or standardized test, that the state will change it and you'll have to learn something new. Understand, quickly, that the bad days will probably outweigh the good ones, but that it only takes one student to grow to love reading to make you feel accomplished and appreciated. Understand that students rarely will understand why they have to read classics and why your class is important when they know they want to major in Biology, but that in a few years one of them will send you a letter in the mail thanking you for all you did for them.

Postsecondary teachers have more flexibility over the format of their instructional methods than their K-12 counterparts. They also have greater control over their schedules, with many postsecondary instructors teaching part time, as well as full time. They have fewer classroom management and procedural responsibilities than grade-school teachers but are expected to devote significant time to preparing lectures and instructions for assignments, in addition to evaluating and providing individual guidance to students when necessary.


Teaching is not for the money, it’s not for the vacations; it’s for the students.  We are preparing the new generation to go out in the world and be well-rounded citizens.  It is rewarding in a way that is not always recognized. You see the reward in your students, while you go unnoticed and that is okay because it’s not about you, it’s about the students.  Yeats says it best: "Education is Not the Filling of a Pail, but the Lighting of a Fire.” We need to light the fires in our students, because without that what do they have?
These are not get-rich-quick opportunities. You will need to work but the potential is there. As an example, the second one on our list is freelance writing. If you're a good writer, you can hit the ground running and earn hundreds of dollars to write once you find the right clients. If you're not a good writer, you may get paid less as you get better and find more clients. The potential is there but so is the work.

Some students decide to teach after they have already completed their bachelor’s degree in English or a related field. In this case, an alternative route to teaching certification may be a good fit.
