Hi, my name's Art, I started teaching ESL 34 years ago in Salamanca Spain, then continued part-time while also teaching Spanish as a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University where I received an M.A. in Hispanic Literature in 1988. I left another career about 7 years ago when my Venezuelan wife and I moved back to her home country, and there I also happily returned to my first career of teaching ESL. I began teaching there at the university level at the Universidad Arturo Michelena, but then realized I felt called to tutoring one student at a time. A few days ago, at the urging of the US embassy in Venezuela, my wife and I returned to the USA. The good news for students is that we have 100-122 Mega speed internet so the audio and video are of excellent quality! ---Many of my students were/are preparing for TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, NATO, or Trinity exams etc. so I have experience helping there. I got to module 3 of 5 with the ICAL TEFL institute based in London for certification in TEFL, but then realized that those courses are aimed primarily at classroom teaching methods, and have little relevance to one-on-one tutoring. If you want to know my qualifications, I suggest reading the comments of my students. There are a variety of names used for the exams, but the most common are: The National Evaluation Series (NES) and Praxis. One section covers your basic skills in writing, math, and reading. The next section will cover your content knowledge in English Language Arts (if you will teach secondary school) or elementary education (if you will teach younger students).
Just as with live classrooms, you’ll want to know how many students you’ll be teaching, as it will affect the types of lessons and assessments you’ll conduct. For example, short answer or essay tests may be challenging to grade with large classes, but technology can make things like multiple choice exams even easier to grade than in a brick-and-mortar classroom.
It doesn’t take much for equipment to get started. Your home computer must be able to play audio files and most companies use transcription software that is available for free. Having a good set of computer headphones will help you better hear your audio files. Some positions additionally recommend a foot pedal which can help increase your production, but this can usually come later.

Take your school career seriously! From the freshman year onward, work hard to become the best reader and writer that you can be. Take advantage of every opportunity to challenge yourself as a learner, take AP classes if available, take online or blended learning classes if available. Use summers to get ahead on your reading and check for the required reading list for all college-bound students. Visit teachers' rooms to see different teaching styles, and remember the great and not so great teachers you have had. You will remember behaviors you want to emulate and those you want to avoid.

English teachers at all levels are expected to have at least a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, mass communications or a specialized discipline such as creative writing or literature. Many high school English teachers also hold master’s degrees. English teachers often specialize in grammar and various literary genres, like British or American literature, public speaking and debate, drama, short stories or essay writing.

I am recent high school graduate and attend St. Edward's University, making me well knowledgeable of the situations students currently face.
