The Online Writing Lab (OWL) at Purdue University houses writing resources and instructional material, and they provide these as a free service of the Writing Lab at Purdue. Students, members of the community, and users worldwide will find information to assist with many writing projects. Teachers and trainers may use this material for in-class and out-of-class instruction.
Consider seeking out fellow students who could use a proofreader before submitting their next paper. Keep in mind that proofreading is far less “hands-on” than editing. You would not be making extensive corrections to other students’ papers for them, but rather becoming the second set of eyes to point out errors or inconsistencies in their assignment before it goes in for official grading.
Many ESL tutoring sites provide everything you need in the way of lesson plans, and you just follow along. In order to teach, you’ll generally need a home computer that can do video chat along with noise-cancelling headphones with a microphone. Some companies require you have a college degree. What It Is: Many companies pay online testers to make sure websites are intuitive and easy to navigate. "You basically follow the instructions you're given to check out the website," says Anna Thurman, founder of RealWaysToEarnMoneyOnline.com, a site that has reviewed more than 500 online work opportunities. "It usually only takes about 15 minutes per test." Thurman recommends registering with 10 to 12 different companies since the opportunities to test these sites are doled out first come, first served. "There are people who make $100 to $200 a month by staying on top of those tests," Thurman says.
Professional associations for English instructors offer webinars, correspondence courses, one-day seminars, symposiums and other continuing education platforms to help teachers advance their knowledge of English literature and writing subjects, improve teaching skills and broaden their scope of educational best practices. These are terrific opportunities to enhance one’s understanding of English language arts concepts while meeting like-minded professionals and improving a resume, LinkedIn page or other professional social media profile.
If that’s you, your first step to preparing is familiarizing yourself with the technology you need to instruct the class, including all the functions you may need and actions you’ll perform. Do you know how to present a slideshow? Share your screen? Transfer controls to a student who’s giving a presentation? Check with your tech team to be sure you understand how to perform the basic functions of your class.
Aside from establishing boundaries with your students and yourself (because let's be honest, this job will have you working nonstop if you let it), I would say to allow yourself to be a beginner. I am 27 and have been told I look 21, so my first semester, I was really worried about that. I cut my hair in an attempt to look older, had my students call me Ms. or Professor Brooks, and would avoid answering questions from my students about how long I'd been teaching or how old I was.
The job of an English teacher requires a deep understanding of sentence structure, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and literature. It encompasses teaching creative composition such as prose, poetry, short stories, and narratives as well as technical writing skills which include news articles, reports, journals, and essays. A teacher of English should develop students’ oral and written communication skills, including critical thinking, oral and written comprehension, and problem-solving skills. English teachers are responsible for planning lessons that fit into a school’s approved curriculum and supporting student learning to state standards.

This course emphasizes a critical approach to examination and selection of literature for K-16 school settings. Review and analysis of theories establish a foundation upon which to critique examples of literature, to view personal practice, and to adjust instructional approaches. Candidates will explore and identify literature selections to generate a stronger connection for all learners.
English teachers at all levels are expected to have at least a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, mass communications or a specialized discipline such as creative writing or literature. English teachers often specialize in subjects such as grammar and various literary genres, like British or American literature, public speaking and debate, or writing.
Candidates are also encouraged to take the Next Step by enrolling in the Teaching Online Practicum where they will create a capstone project focusing on their lessons and skills learned throughout the entire Teaching Online certificate program. This course will focus on students progress and practical application to current or prospective work opportunities. Students will work collaboratively with an advisor before submitting their final project. During the application process, a prospective candidate should consider a possible project or course they will build throughout the program. The project or course will allow the student to apply learned tools and demonstrate results in delivering curriculum online.
An online tutor must possess at least a bachelor's degree. Tutors are also often asked to pass certain exams to show that they are competent in the subjects they are assigned to tutor. Online high school teachers must have at least a bachelor's degree and a valid teaching credential. Most schools prefer applicants to possess a master's degree. Online professors are typically required to possess a doctorate degree; however, some colleges will hire adjunct professors with master's degrees. Most tutors and teachers must be willing to provide references and submit to a background check.
A word of caution: Remember that where very little is required, very little is offered. These jobs don’t pay much, and they are not going to provide a reference for your resume. It may take working at several different of these online jobs to pull in the income you want. And as always, know the signs of a work-at-home scam as you sort through the opportunities.
