Hi, my name's Art, I started teaching ESL 34 years ago in Salamanca Spain, then continued part-time while also teaching Spanish as a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University where I received an M.A. in Hispanic Literature in 1988. I left another career about 7 years ago when my Venezuelan wife and I moved back to her home country, and there I also happily returned to my first career of teaching ESL. I began teaching there at the university level at the Universidad Arturo Michelena, but then realized I felt called to tutoring one student at a time. A few days ago, at the urging of the US embassy in Venezuela, my wife and I returned to the USA. The good news for students is that we have 100-122 Mega speed internet so the audio and video are of excellent quality! ---Many of my students were/are preparing for TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, NATO, or Trinity exams etc. so I have experience helping there. I got to module 3 of 5 with the ICAL TEFL institute based in London for certification in TEFL, but then realized that those courses are aimed primarily at classroom teaching methods, and have little relevance to one-on-one tutoring. As faculty, you have the option to incorporate supplementary reading materials in your class such as free online web sources and/or the Shapiro Library. Web based materials and resources can often add richness to your course and are free for the student. This is also a way for you, the adjunct faculty, to personalize your course and incorporate creativity.
Tutees are expected to use each session to learn the problem solving process and how to reach answers on their own. We would like to emphasize, however, that attending tutoring will not guarantee a passing/high grade in the course if you do not do any work outside of tutoring. To do well in your courses, you will also need to attend lecture, utilize office hours, and do your own studying outside of tutoring.
We wanted my daughter to enjoy learning chemistry and to think of her career in chemistry or chemistry-related area. Online classes have traditionally been asynchronous, meaning students engage with the course materials on their own time. But now there are programs that feature live sessions, where the teacher and students meet online for a live-streamed lecture and/or discussion. While this can be a huge advantage for students who stand to benefit from in-class discussions with other students, live lectures and real-time interactions, it can be overwhelming for a teacher who’s conducting an online class for the first time.
Tutors want to teach in a way their students best understand, so it’s important that you not be passive during your sessions. If your tutor’s style isn’t working for you, speak up and say so. If certain activities make it hard for you to stay focused, let your tutor know so you can try a different format in a future lesson. Your tutor can’t make changes if you don’t voice your concerns.
