Princeton’s initiative in online education seeks to apply the lessons from decades of empirical research that has consistently established correlations between high student engagement and academic success. How can new online course environments and tools be used to create opportunities for heightening the interaction between faculty and their students in both online and classroom environments? What new forms of evidence do online learning tools produce that can help us study and identify effective strategies for teaching and learning?
Teaching is not for the money, it’s not for the vacations; it’s for the students. We are preparing the new generation to go out in the world and be well-rounded citizens. It is rewarding in a way that is not always recognized. You see the reward in your students, while you go unnoticed and that is okay because it’s not about you, it’s about the students. Yeats says it best: "Education is Not the Filling of a Pail, but the Lighting of a Fire.” We need to light the fires in our students, because without that what do they have?
These are not get-rich-quick opportunities. You will need to work but the potential is there. As an example, the second one on our list is freelance writing. If you're a good writer, you can hit the ground running and earn hundreds of dollars to write once you find the right clients. If you're not a good writer, you may get paid less as you get better and find more clients. The potential is there but so is the work.
