Great post. I think for eBook authors outside of the US, though, Amazon is just a pain. Firstly, they take months to pay. Secondly, they actually send a physical paper check all the way across the ocean (I live in Australia) instead of just paying by PayPal. It’s very 1970s, and irritating. So if you get a payment of $20, you have to pay a currency conversion fee of $10 at the bank here, so you only get half your money.
In a VPN connection, your IP gets masked, so nobody can track your IP address and locate you. While downloading eBooks from torrenting websites it is paramount to browse through a VPN. Moreover, viruses and dubious bugs can’t follow you back and corrupt your system or leak or steal your identity online. When you use public VPNs to download books, then also you are kept secured against all odds, as VPN forms a protected fence between your browsing and the ISP or the world.
Calibre will allow you to convert a an epub file to Mobi or other formats and to also set a cover, and meta data – it will generate a complete ebook file you can upload to Amazon in a few moments – you can generate an epub file from Word using Aspose.WordsEXPRESS. You must know what settings to use in Calibre to generate an ebook from the resulting epub file. I will send you a free copy of my ebook about this called “Word to Kindle and Nook: How to Publish eBooks using Word” which details the settings and shows screenshots of the entire process. It takes just minutes to get a Word document ready for Kindle or Nook publishing using the two free programs. My ebook is not in Kindle Select now, so it has fallen greatly in sales on Amazon – in fact, I don’t do much writing, anymore. I am focusing on my abstract paintings since moving permanently to Hawaii – so anybody who wants a free copy of my book just let me know where to send it and I will give you a copy. You can use Fiverr.com to have someone design an ebook cover for you, too! I have formatted a word based ebook with 77,000 plus words in it and tons of images using these two programs and my special settings with perfect results. For the curious, this book is “Aliens in Egypt”, by Xaviant Haze.

eBookShare is among the best eBook torrenting sites in the market. It helps you read the description and know more about the torrent eBook you have downloaded just now. Be it the author or title or the subject of the eBook, you can seamlessly enjoy reading the favorite pick, without any fuss or hassle. A VPN connection is reliable to use this website. This is because, the portal obeys DMCA notion strictly.
Also, if you have books in print from previous publishing deals, you can get them scanned from print back into Word so you can produce an ebook from that retrospectively. Many authors who had deals over 10 years ago will own their ebook rights, so it’s worth checking your contracts to see if you can publish digital versions, even if a traditional publisher owns your print rights. It is free to self-publish on the most popular ebook platforms. Obviously, you have to pay upfront for editing and cover design but the actual publishing is free and the stores take a small percentage of sales. Compared to most other business models, publishing in this digital age has low overheads, low entry costs and potentially a high margin of return.
It’s too expensive. At $36, it offers great value given all the stuff I packed into it, but people are used to paying less for ebooks. Even worse, by blowing out all my info in one book, I had no followup book to upsell the writers who bought the first book. I wasn’t creating a sales machine, like you want. I just had a one-off product. Again, I probably would have done better publishing a smaller ebook at a lower price.
“… Write it in Word because if you decide to format this yourself, you must save your file to a filtered .html or .htm format, which translates on the Kindle very well.” This is not true. My ebooks looked like TOTAL CRAP after converting from Word. I cannot sell books looking like that so I pulled them from the program. I will probably have them professionally formatted at a later time.

Your timing is impeccable on this one as I’m working on completing my first eBook. And there’s so much that goes into just WRITING it, let alone the formatting, marketing, sales funnel angles, etc. Who can know it all? And what’s the point of all that hard work writing it if no one hears your “one hand clapping” in the digital woods? So thank you for this.
Gary,I agree. I actually got my husband to get really really good at this and now he is doing the formatting and publishing for others, and of course he is doing all of my books. It helps to do a professional publish because as you say,it is very important to make the right impression with our books. I am so happy that Amazon brought us the Kindle store. It is an amazing platform!
Piracy will happen if your book is popular. There’s really no way of stopping it, but what do you think the most pirated books are? Harry Potter and other big sellers, of course, and does that impact their sales? Most people who pirate books are not going to be your readers anyway. It’s more important to consider obscurity, then piracy. More authors suffer from being completely unknown than from being famous enough to be significantly pirated.
