Hi, my name's Art, I started teaching ESL 34 years ago in Salamanca Spain, then continued part-time while also teaching Spanish as a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University where I received an M.A. in Hispanic Literature in 1988. I left another career about 7 years ago when my Venezuelan wife and I moved back to her home country, and there I also happily returned to my first career of teaching ESL. I began teaching there at the university level at the Universidad Arturo Michelena, but then realized I felt called to tutoring one student at a time. A few days ago, at the urging of the US embassy in Venezuela, my wife and I returned to the USA. The good news for students is that we have 100-122 Mega speed internet so the audio and video are of excellent quality! ---Many of my students were/are preparing for TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, NATO, or Trinity exams etc. so I have experience helping there. I got to module 3 of 5 with the ICAL TEFL institute based in London for certification in TEFL, but then realized that those courses are aimed primarily at classroom teaching methods, and have little relevance to one-on-one tutoring. If you want to know my qualifications, I suggest reading the comments of my students. I've made a list of online jobs that pay weekly, daily, or multiple times a week. There are a lot of work at home opportunities that only pay monthly or twice a month, and getting paid that infrequently may not do much to help with immediate financial needs. Please know that this list isn't done and I plan to add to it continuously as I find things that meet this criteria.
Fay — I have a few posts up that list ways to get fast cash, but if you’re looking for bill money, those might not help much because the things I listed there are mostly good for gas money, pizza money, etc. Just a little extra. I know that with the phone positions there’s often a few weeks or more worth of wait time while you’re getting a background check done, training, and so forth. The sales positions (things like Helios, which has actually received negative feedback lately from some of my readers) could probably have you up and working and making money quickly. I do have a post on this blog covering Helios. But not everyone likes sales, so that may not be the route you’d want to take.
English teachers should have outstanding vocabularies, with a firm grasp of word pronunciation and spelling and the ability to effortlessly break words down phonetically. They are expected to have a strong command of grammar and sentence structure rules, with a systematic and consistent approach to enforcing them. Grammar guidelines often require a repetitious approach, with a teaching style that balances classroom participation against the needs of individual students if they fall behind.
Some English teachers also teach journalism and yearbook courses, drama, public speaking, debate, and a variety of specialized writing classes that focus on magazine, fiction, early romantic, neoclassical or biographical writing. Regardless of their area of expertise, all English teachers are expected to have a firm grasp of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and written communication rules.
Postsecondary teachers have more flexibility over the format of their instructional methods than their K-12 counterparts. They also have greater control over their schedules, with many postsecondary instructors teaching part time, as well as full time. The lack of a “remote” or “online learning” job qualifiers reflects a time not-so-long-ago when higher education gigs where all desk jobs, located deep inside the Ivory Tower.
That can be hard when you’ve been out of work for a while and a plum position seems to fall smack dab into your lap. But think about the job and how you were approached about it in an objective light. If something just feels off, or you feel uncomfortable for any reason (e.g., the job recruiter is pushy or demanding, or you don’t have a clear understanding of the job responsibilities), don’t think twice about walking away from it.

Most states require at least a bachelor’s degree when you first seek a state certification or license. Each state will have a list of accredited institutions that are qualified to award a degree appropriate for licensing. As you look through your choice of schools, you will want to cross reference them with the State Board of Education’s approved list of schools (completing a degree program that isn’t accredited can result in disqualification for licensing).
It might sound obvious, but make sure you bring your textbooks, class notes, assignments, and anything else that will be useful during your sessions. If you don’t have the materials you need, your tutor will not be able to effectively teach you what you need to know. Save time by having them laid out, organized, and ready to go for your session. If your school utilizes a coursework website, send your tutor the link ahead of time (if possible) so they can see exactly what you’re working on for themselves.
