Smashwords is one of the world’s largest distributors of indie e-books with distribution to retailers like Kobo, iBookstore, Nook, and, just recently, Scribd. The company does not currently distribute to Amazon. The advantage to using a distributor is that it saves authors from having to upload their book with each retailer separately. Smashwords also offers consolidated sales reports, which allow authors access the sales information from various retailers all in one place. Smashwords offers royalties of 60% of list price from major e-book retailers and 85% net from sales directly from Smashwords with some exceptions. The company offers global distribution in 51 countries. It offers free conversion to various e-pub formats from a Word doc but requires authors to format the pre-conversion document themselves. It offers a free style guide for this purpose or it will provide a list of recommended e-book formatters who charge a small fee. Authors have the option of selecting a free sample section of their book for readers to give their book a test drive before deciding to purchase. Smashwords also offers a free marketing guide by the founder of the company that includes 41 marketing tips.
It takes time to build your audience at other stores, and having multiple books in a series is the best way to gain reader loyalty and sales for the long term. Each store has comparative strengths and weaknesses in the different worldwide markets, so building for the future means going wide. You can also listen to/read this interview with experienced indie author, Liliana Hart all about going wide with distribution.

Pricing: Some services have limits on how to price your book. For instance, Amazon doesn’t allow authors to offer their books for free, and both Amazon and Kobo offer different royalties in different price ranges. This may not be a bad thing (after all, they know the pricing “sweet spots”), but you want to avoid getting stuck in a situation where you don’t like the price and can do nothing about it. Finding the right price for your ebook is not easy; choose a platform where you can experiment before committing.
Another online eBook converter commonly used is Zamzar; a site which requires no download or user registration. Zamzar supports wide range of eBook formats and can be easily utilized for converting eBooks. Converted eBook files are sent to the specified email address and are accessible for the user to download them. The process of conversion is illustrated in the image above on the Zamzar website.
Lindy Gordon is living the enviable life of an entrepreneur in San Francisco. Her public relations firm is thriving, her marriage is strong and her apartment at the top of Noe Valley is the envy of her friends. Then the unthinkable happens. “… Write it in Word because if you decide to format this yourself, you must save your file to a filtered .html or .htm format, which translates on the Kindle very well.” This is not true. My ebooks looked like TOTAL CRAP after converting from Word. I cannot sell books looking like that so I pulled them from the program. I will probably have them professionally formatted at a later time.

Though, there are many sites which are serving free e-book torrents and paid ebooks. But, several of these sites are getting banned due to copyright violations. You can unblock ebook torrent sites using any of the proxy or a VPN. Becky, the post image is a promo graphic put out by Amazon to advertise the Kindle Touch, not an image from the Amazon page for the The Paris Wife (which you can see is completely different). They chose to feature Paula McLain’s book on the device. We’re just using their supplied media graphic. Sorry for the confusion, but I’m not sure this is much of an issue that requires correction.
From the tiny list of the torrent sites that are still working, RARBG is one of them that’s extremely reliable. It was created way back in 2008 and still manages to run without any hitches. You’ll find a legion of e-books on this site that can be easily downloaded and converted into a file type of your choice. Though the UI may seem a little confusing at first, you’ll soon get used to it and appreciate the features available.
And as for the problem, I’m a fourteen year old (aspiring) author and I’m looking to self-publish my novel through KDP. But I really feel like it’s a sort of cop-out– just slapping it up on the internet and advertising. Like giving up without trying. I really want to share my work with others, but I don’t want just a few people to see it, I want it to be more than that. I’m not saying I will be disappointed with anything less than J.K. Rowling-worthy sales, but it would be comforting to know that it isn’t just uselessly floating around on the internet. Does any of that make sense? Furthermore, my current plan is to be a novelist for a living, and I feel like I might as well get myself out there sooner than later, right? Get started while my parents will still support me, build up my own little army of people wanting another book, and be set for a while?

Advantage: Almost anyone can make an ebook. You can transform your manuscript from a word-processing format into an ebook by formatting it according to the platform on which you're publishing. Two of the most common platforms are Amazon's Kindle and Smashwords. Once it has been formatted, all you need is a few minutes to publish your book, and it could be up for purchase in as little as one or two days. Even better, it's free to publish on both Kindle and Smashwords, so anybody can publish an ebook for worldwide sale with a few simple clicks.
Jane: Thanks so much for this awesome compendium! I have benefited greatly from other postings of yours as well. I do have one question, however. I absolutely MUST get an editor for my historical fiction novel but am also unemployed. I have heard from others about Movable Type Management/Rogue Pricing, which offers editing for a small take of the profits (which seems wholly fair to me) though I would be open to other similar entities. I don’t find much here in this list addressing editors and outfits such as MTM, unless I am overlooking something. My novel is around 260,000… Read more »
As far as I know, even outfits like Rogue Reader have a submissions/acceptance process; you can’t offer a profit share and expect to be assisted for free without them reviewing the work and deciding it’s something they want to invest time into. (However, if you can provide a link to a page that explains otherwise, I’d definitely like to see it.) If you don’t want to pay anything for editing, your best bet is to get involved in online writing communities where writers serve as each others beta readers. Wattpad, Authonomy, and BookCountry are some of the most active and… Read more »
Now, after being greatly upset by the above post, we after all are just myself, my wife and a couple of writer friends trying to do something new and different, I decided to do some searching on the net and found a site closely related to our name (zippyshare) which DOES have quite a shady reputation as both spammer and illegal downloader, but I want to make the readers here at Library Thing aware that those folks have NOTHING to do with us. (I picked HotZippy because I thought it had a cute sounding name like Google or Kobo etc and probably should have looked a little more closely, though I never anticipated something such as this happening to us.)
